We received input from horseshoe pitchers of all skill levels from all over the country when designing the SideWinder.

The Sidewinder by Thoroughbred is a very well balanced easy turning horseshoe. The blade area and hooks are identical to the Bronco Pro Flip by Thoroughbred. The difference is the thumb cleat. On the Sidewinder the thumb cleat is on the normal or conventional side which is the side with the hook cleats. The thumb cleat is also smaller and lower. This shoe is primarily used by tournament players that pitch the turn and a quarter and the turn and three quarter. It is also used by flip pitchers that hold the shoe with the thumb cleat in the down position. The smaller thumb cleat on this shoe is an advantage for the flip pitcher with that type of grip.

This is one of the newer Thoroughbreds. It is made for serious players that want to improve there game. They are match weighted to within one tenth of an ounce like all Thoroughbreds and made in America with the highest quality metals.

Sidewinder is a traditional styled and shaped horseshoe with “dead center” balance. It has the Thoroughbred’s “claw-like” cleats and hooks. Sidewinder is made from our specialized formulation of ductile iron which produces a dead soft rating, but requires almost no filing! This is everything you asked for in a pro pitching shoe. When you proceed to the next page to enter this item into your shopping cart, you will be prompted to choose quantity, color and weight options. The color option is pretty basic, but the weight option requires a bit of explanation...

In the weight selection box, you will be asked to choose from three selections: official weight, medium and heavy. The official weight of a horseshoe is 2 lbs. 8 oz. and the NHPA allows for a variance of two ounces, making the maximum weight 2 lbs. 10 oz.

If you select "Official Weight" you will get horseshoes within that range and that generally satisfies most everyone.

Occasionally, some advanced pitchers want to specify shoes on the lighter side or heavier side of that range and that's why we have the other two selections. If "Medium" is requested you'll get shoes at the bottom of the weight range and if "Heavy" is selected you'll get shoes near the maximum weight. Obviously, it's only a two ounce range, so the difference is nearly imperceptible to most people. But for those who have a preference, those options are there. It seems those who've been at it a while seem to prefer the slightly heavier shoe.
