World Tournament Report:

Congratulations to Tony White for a fine performance at the 2002 World Horseshoe Tournament in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada. Tony was the lone representative of the Erie Horseshoe Club at this event last month and certainly represented us well. After competing in the mixed Junior Class A group, he qualified for the Junior Boys Championship Class and finished 5th overall, pitching 61.3% ringers for 22 games spread over four days of competition. OUTSTANDING!!!

PA State Tournament Results:

The PA State Horseshoe Championships were held in Warren, PA over Labor Day weekend. Our club had many participants, but only 3 champions. They are as follows:

Tony White, Junior Division Champion

Frank Bohun, 30 Ft. Elders Division Champion

Mike Maloney, Men’s Class B Champion

Thanks to our 3 champions and all those who participated and represented our club.

Tournament highlights for Erie:

In the final game of the Junior Championship, Tony White and Sam Chilcott, both undefeated (and both EHC members), met for a tremendous battle for the title. Both players started the game with 13 ringers of the first 14 shoes pitched and battled like that from then on. Sam led the game by a point or two most of the way, but Tony was able to edge him out at the end, final score of 40 to 32. Sam threw 70% in the losing effort to Tony’s 75% for the 60 shoe match. TREMENDOUS performance by both boys!

In the Elders Division, Frank Bohun, threw the tournament’s high game overall— 96.7% WOW!! What happened to that one shoe?

WPHPA Crisis:

Ron Weiss, President and Secretary/Treasurer of the Western PA Horseshoe Pitchers’ Association resigned all positions during the annual association meeting held in Warren during the state tournament. This leaves EHC member, Harvey Hayes, as the sole remaining officer and acting President of the WPHPA. Consequently, there are several officer positions available to any WPHPA member who wishes to step up and help the association through this crisis. It appears as though the executive council will be holding elections for the open positions. If anyone is interested in any of the open positions or even in helping until they are filled, contact Harvey at 899-4406.
